Question of the Day: how thick is an elephant’s skin?

We went on an elephant trek the other day and learned this factoid, among many others. The elephant hook the mahout uses is not meant to penetrate their skin and is only intended to be a training device, something akin to reins on a horse. This is Day Two of Elephant Week on the blog.

I am writing from Mr. Understanding’s computer, which I abhor, until we return to Shanghai on Sunday. All entries, thusly, will be short and sweet! Good stories and photos will follow next week.

I do not know the thickness of their skin, but I do know that their tongues feel like jello, and they like to have them rubbed. I got to hang with the elephants of the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, many moons ago!
So wish I could be riding with you all!
